Generative AI is an amazing wiring tool. It is also highly controversial. Despite its obvious benefits to writers – or maybe because of this – there is a perception that using GenAI in document creation is somehow “cheating”.
When I did a LinkedIn poll, the majority of respondents said I should be honest about when I use GenAI. They also said they would discredit a post written with such digital help. Yet how many of them would say that a writer not use Google Search or autocorrect? These are two obvious examples of artificial intelligence supporting the writing craft without question today.
Generative AI is a Valid Writing Tool
Digital calculators did not neuter our ability to do math, they just made it easier to do larger equations and saved us from finding square roots by hand. Generative AI is the same. GenAI will not steal your business development job – but someone who knows how to use GenAI may beat you for the next funding opportunity.
Hence, I will use Generative AI throughout ICTworks posts. Just like I use any other digital research tool. It will help me discover new topics, inform my responses, and even create first drafts. ChatGPT is a great overeager graduate assistant. However, I will always review every single word, check every single fact, and stand behind every post I write.
GenAI is Changing What is Written
Generative AI is changing what is valued by human readers like you (hi!). No longer can I post a research report synopsis as if this is unique information. ChatGPT can create summaries in seconds. Nor can I create general explanations or intervention lists as if they are special. Claude, Perplexity and others do this just fine.
What is still uniquely human, what no GenAI tool can do, is bring together themes and concepts from across the digital development ecosystem to give you key insights, ideas, and opinions. Look for more engaging discussions at the intersection of digital and development on ICTworks.
