Today, DFID became the 100th endorsing organization for the Principles of Digital Development. Congratulations to the Digital Impact Alliance, DFID, and the international development community for a magnificent milestone!
Four years ago this month, I remember meeting with Merrick Schaefer and a few others to figure out how we were going to get anyone to adopt 9 seemingly obvious, but obviously ignored principles for better ICT4D projects.
After much debate, we settled on developing a core set of believers who could then evangelize the Digital Principles to the greater ICT4D community. This process was wildly successful. What started with a few hopeful emails to others, became a series of meetings, and then a whole movement, now led by DIAL on a global stage.
Along the way, the Digital Principles have helped CRS create an ICT4D strategy, made other sectors ask where their principles are, and inspired at least two new sets of principles:
- WEST Principles: 8 Guidelines for Worker Engagement Interventions
- The Principles on Identification for Sustainable Development
It’s now with great pleasure that we can all celebrate DFID’s principled digital strategy. Thank you to everyone for helping us build a dynamic community of technology practitioners – and the community is still growing!
Like any living body of knowledge, there is a community forum to support the Digital Principles and you can advocate for your organization to be the 101st endorser.
