Civil society groups are using mobile phones to document human rights abuses around the world. Then they use social media and online messaging to advocate for more just societies. Artificial intelligence can supercharge their efforts – if we close the gap between them and the authoritarian regimes that seek to oppress.

We need to fund compute, capacity, and context – the three Cs of advancing equity through artificial intelligence.

  • Compute: increasing access to AI models, compute credit, and other AI tools
  • Capacity: building human technical capacity to implement AI solutions
  • Context: expanding local datasets to include all communities

PGIAI Funding for AI Solutions

The Partnership for Global Inclusivity on AI brings together the Department of State, Amazon, Anthropic, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI in the $100 million PGIAI program leveraging their combined expertise, resources, and networks to unlock AI’s potential as a powerful tool for sustainable development and improved quality of life in developing countries.

This initial call for Expressions of Interest probably relates to Anthropic providing up to $1 million in API access to Claude and Claude for Teams to government projects focused on improving citizen services, advancing democracy, and supporting the UN sustainable development goals.

The project terms suggest that proposals should include State Department projects where at least one of the Project Leaders is affiliated with government and needs Claude Pro seats, Anthropic API credits, or AWS Bedrock credits to access Claude. All submitters should maintaining an unwavering commitment to the UNGA AI resolution on safety, security, and trustworthiness in AI systems for sustainable development.
