Women’s economic empowerment is critical to sustainable development in India (and globally). Yet, the gender digital divide continues to erode progress in women’s equality and economic security as digital advances leave over a billion women, girls, and marginalized populations on the far side of digital inclusion, including digital financial inclusion.
Without a major shift in how the gender digital divide is conceptualized and addressed, the gap will persist and grow, resulting in women lacking access to critical information, services, and opportunities, further exacerbating existing gender inequalities.
When women thrive, societies, businesses and economies thrive. As such, realizing the full potential of digital inclusion for women in India is crucial.
$500,000 to Bridge the Indian Gender Digital Divide
WiDEF seeks local Indian entities who can scale a solution that significantly enhances the digital inclusion of women, improving their livelihoods, economic security, and resilience. Funding is open to small or medium for-profits entities as well as non-profits with a valid FCRA that will address at least two of the four core WiDEF priority areas:
- Access to Affordable Devices: Increase women’s access to affordable, reliable, and secure internet-enabled devices.
- Relevant Products and Tools: Provide tools (interfaces, apps) that meet women’s needs, especially for income generation.
- Digital Literacy and Skills: Enhance women’s digital skills and media literacy for safe participation in the digital economy.
- Safety and Security: Address technology-facilitated gender-based violence and improve digital protection measures. Support solutions enhancing safety, even with limited evidence.
- Data and Insights: Expand sex-disaggregated data collection and gender analysis to tackle disparities in technology adoption and inform equitable digital policies.
WiDEF offers grant funding of $100,000 – $500,000 over the course of 15-18 months, bootcamps with expert-led sessions, and advisory support on monitoring, evaluation and learning.
